Hysteria

In Victorian London, a young doctor struggling to make his mark takes a position with a physician famed for treating "hysteria" in women through a hands-on massage technique. As demand for the treatment outpaces the older doctor's endurance, his new assistant and a friend with a passion for electrical gadgets devise a device that could replace the manual method. Complicating matters, the young doctor becomes entangled with both of his employer's daughters.

Tanya Wexler directed this comedy, the first of three features listed for her, followed by Buffaloed and Jolt. Jonah Lisa Dyer and Stephen Dyer wrote the screenplay, and Sarah Curtis, Tracey Becker and Judy Cairo produced. Hugh Dancy plays Dr. Mortimer Granville, with Maggie Gyllenhaal as Charlotte Dalrymple and Jonathan Pryce as Dr. Robert Dalrymple. Felicity Jones, Rupert Everett and Ashley Jensen round out the principal cast, which numbers 23 credited performers.

The film was a modestly scaled international co-production involving companies from Germany, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, France and Switzerland, and it took about 10 million dollars worldwide.
