Ivan, a Hong Kong man approaching thirty, is absorbed by fitness and his career until a late-night sauna visit brings him face to face with Windson, whose athletic build and openness unsettle him at once. Ivan falls hard, yet Windson is straight, and the intimacy that grows between them—shared workouts, showers, wrestling, boxing, and an unshakeable closeness—keeps Ivan suspended between hope and the likelihood of never being loved the way he wants. Around this pursuit, the film traces Ivan's life and his preoccupation with the people he loves and the prospect of losing them.
Permanent Residence is a Hong Kong drama written, produced and directed by Scud, the first title in the directing career listed for him. Sean Li plays Ivan, with Osman Hung as Windson; Jackie Chow, Lau Yu-Hong and Jonathan Lee Yat-Sing appear in supporting roles, and the credited cast runs to sixty-two names, with Scud himself taking a small part.
Made through Artwalker and Golden Scene, the film runs 115 minutes and was released in April 2009. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.6 out of 10 from twenty-two votes, a small sample indicating limited attention there rather than a settled verdict.
