12 Dates of Christmas
Short description
Kate is still struggling to accept the end of her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Jack. On Christmas Eve, she behaves poorly during a blind date with a man named Miles. Due to a strange turn of events, Kate finds herself repeating the same day twelve times. This magical loop gives her the opportunity to fix her mistakes on the date and reconsider her priorities regarding her family and friends.
Directed by James Hayman, this production followed his 2009 film Sorority Wars. The movie stars Amy Smart as Kate Stanton, Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Miles Dufine, and Benjamin Ayres as Jack Evans. It is a romantic fantasy comedy produced as a TV movie through a collaboration between companies in Spain, Canada, and the United States.
The film has received a generally positive response from viewers. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 6.3/10 based on 9,300 votes, while on TMDB it has a score of 6.1/10 from 313 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Kate's watch (played by Amy Smart) is very similar to the watch Phil wears, played by Bill Murray in Harold Ramis's fantasy comedy "Groundhog Day" (1993), and the film "12 Dates of Christmas" itself was inspired by "Groundhog Day."
- Jim, played by Richard Fitzpatrick, mentions Zihuatanejo during a conversation with Jane Eastwood's character about a trip to Mexico. This is a reference to screenwriter Aaron Mendelsohn's favorite film, "The Shawshank Redemption" (Frank Darabont, 1994), as the heroes Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman met on the beach there in the finale.
- The filmmakers wanted to end the film with a kiss between the characters played by Amy Smart and Marc-Paul Gosselaar against a backdrop of snow, so snow had to be added to the shot using digital technology.
