The Craft

Sarah is a lonely seventeen-year-old who has just moved to Los Angeles with her father and is struggling to fit in at her new Catholic school, St. Benedict's Academy. There she meets three classmates, Nancy, Bonnie and Rochelle, who are drawn to the occult and are treated as outsiders by the other students. Together the four form a circle and cast spells that begin to grant them what they most want, and to strike back at those who have wronged them. Their magic proves effective, but it also escalates, and the group's rivalries turn the power they have raised into something dangerous.

Andrew Fleming directed and co-wrote the film with Peter Filardi, and Douglas Wick produced it. It was Fleming's third feature, following Bad Dreams in 1988 and Threesome in 1994. Robin Tunney plays Sarah, with Fairuza Balk as Nancy, Neve Campbell as Bonnie and Rachel True as Rochelle; Skeet Ulrich and Christine Taylor also appear. The production, made by Columbia Pictures and Red Wagon Entertainment, had a budget of about 15 million dollars and took roughly 25 million dollars worldwide.

Made on a modest scale, the film drew a mixed critical response, with critics' reviews averaging 5.5 out of 10. Audiences have been more favorable: it holds 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 120,000 votes and 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB. Thirty-six credited cast members and eighty-four credited crew worked on the production.
