LOLA
Short description
Set in England leading up to and during World War II, this science fiction drama follows sisters Thomasina and Martha Hanbury. The pair builds a device called LOLA that can intercept radio and television signals from the future. While they initially use the technology to listen to music that has not yet been created, the rise of the Nazi threat prompts them to use the machine to gather military intelligence. However, their attempts to manipulate time lead to unintended consequences.
Directed by Andrew Legge, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Angeli Macfarlane, the film stars Emma Appleton and Stefanie Martini as the two sisters. The supporting cast includes Rory Fleck-Byrne, Aaron Monaghan, Theodora Brabazon Legge, and Francesca Brabazon Legge. A joint production between the United Kingdom and Ireland, the movie was produced by Alan Maher and John Wallace.
The film received mixed reactions from viewers. On TMDB, it holds a rating of 6.5/10 based on 120 votes, whereas on IMDb it has a lower score of 3.8/10 from 1,300 votes. In contrast to these audience figures, film critics gave the movie a higher rating of 7.2/10 based on 40 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the film was planned as a joint project by director Nicola Peltz Beckham (who also served as the screenwriter) and actress Bria Vinaite, but ultimately Vinaite was never cast in the film.
- Nicola Peltz Beckham wrote the screenplay in just three days. She was 23 years old at the time.
