Bride Wars
Short description
Emma and Liv are lifelong best friends who have long dreamed of marrying at New York's Plaza Hotel, and they plan their weddings together. An scheduling mistake books both ceremonies on the same day, and neither woman is willing to give up the date, the venue or the guest list. What begins as a shared celebration turns into an escalating contest, as each tries to undercut the other's big day.
Gary Winick directed the film, his fourth feature after Tadpole, 13 Going on 30 and Charlotte's Web, and his second-to-last before Letters to Juliet. The screenplay is by Greg DePaul, Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael. Kate Hudson, who also produced, plays Liv, with Anne Hathaway as Emma; Bryan Greenberg, Chris Pratt, Steve Howey and Candice Bergen appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of 39 and crew of 61.
Released in January 2009, the comedy cost about 30 million dollars and took roughly 115 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audience responses were mixed: on IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from around 123,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from 3,238 votes. A critics' rating of 3.5 out of 10 from 144 reviews places it well below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to the original script, the film was supposed to be a teen comedy, with Emma Roberts (Liv) and Nikki Reed (Emma) in the lead roles. This idea was later abandoned, and the script had to be rewritten.
- During the scene where gifts are presented to the bride at the wedding, many wives and girlfriends of the then-players of the Boston Red Sox baseball team make cameo appearances.
- Filming took place from March 31 to June 2008 in New York, Boston, and the small town of Salem, Massachusetts.
- At the 38th minute of the film, Deb (Emma's bridesmaid) drinks wine from a wide glass. But by the middle of the 39th minute, the glass changes to a narrow one with a long stem. Also, the label on the bottle changes from white to gold. This was an accident - one of the actors threw away the first bottle during filming. It was never found, and he put his own in there.
- In the episode where the choreographer sent by Liv teaches Emma and Fletcher to dance, he parodies the choreographer from the film 'Bring It On'. The music from that film also plays at this moment.
