Short description
Barney Ross leads a team of mercenaries who once counted Conrad Stonebanks among their founding members. Stonebanks later turned to arms dealing, and Barney believed he had killed him. Stonebanks survived and now intends to wipe out the team. To counter an enemy who knows how they operate, Barney recruits younger fighters with newer technical skills alongside his veteran crew, setting up a clash between established methods and modern ones.
Patrick Hughes directed the film, the second of the six features he has made, following Red Hill in 2010. Sylvester Stallone stars as Barney and shares screenplay credit with Katrin Benedikt and Creighton Rothenberger. Jason Statham returns as Lee Christmas, with Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Wesley Snipes among the large credited cast, and Mel Gibson playing Stonebanks. The production, mounted across Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, the United States and France, cost 95 million dollars and returned 215 million dollars worldwide.
Audience responses were moderate. On IMDb the film holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 206,000 votes, and on TMDB it has 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 5,455 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 172 reviews places it below those audience scores.

- Jean-Claude Van Damme was considered for the role of Jean Vilain's twin brother, Claude Vilain.
- Clint Eastwood was offered one of the roles, but he declined.
- Dwayne Johnson and Hulk Hogan were willing to star in the film, but were turned down.
- Steven Seagal could have starred in the film.
- Bruce Willis was supposed to play the role of Church for a fee of $3 million ($750,000 for each of the four shooting days). When he demanded $1 million per day, Sylvester Stallone and the film's producers refused, after which he left the project. Literally 3 days later, Stallone secured Harrison Ford for a similar role.
- Sylvester Stallone offered Jackie Chan a supporting role, but he declined because he wanted to play one of the leading roles.
- During the filming of a scene in a truck with Jason Statham, an accident occurred – the truck fell into the sea due to brake failure. The actor was unharmed.
- Nicolas Cage was considered for the role of Bonaparte before Kelsey Grammer was cast.
- Mickey Rourke was offered the opportunity to reprise the role of Tool.
- Milla Jovovich was considered for the role of Camilla, but ultimately left the project.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger's filming took just over a week.
- Lucas Till auditioned for the role of Smiley, which was later given to Kellan Lutz.
- When Doc (Wesley Snipes) is asked what he was imprisoned for, he replies that it was for tax evasion. Snipes was indeed convicted and served three years in prison for failing to pay taxes.
- When Barney Ross interrogated Conrad Stonebanks in the van, an N7 suit (photo) belonging to Captain Shepard, the main character of the video game Mass Effect, is visible in the background.

- In this part of “The Expendables,” they fly on a Soviet An-26 military transport aircraft repainted in their team's colors. The aircraft type designations are preserved on the tail and in the nose of the fuselage. In some scenes in the cockpit (particularly behind the first pilot), Russian inscriptions can be seen.
