Moontrap

A routine space mission takes an unexpected turn when two NASA astronauts, the veteran pilot Jason Grant and his younger partner Ray Tanner, find a derelict vessel drifting in lunar orbit. Inside it lies a mummified humanoid body and an oval metal capsule. Brought back to a laboratory on Earth, the capsule opens and its contents begin to rebuild themselves, drawing on the corpse and on nearby machinery to assemble a hostile robotic entity. As the machine grows more dangerous, Grant and Tanner return to the Moon, where they discover the remains of an extinct civilization and a lone survivor, Mera, and learn that the intruder is part of a long-prepared trap.

The film is a 1989 American science fiction horror feature directed by Robert Dyke, who also produced it, from a screenplay by Tex Ragsdale. It was Dyke's first directorial credit, and he later returned to the same territory with Timequest and Moontrap: Target Earth. Walter Koenig plays Grant and Bruce Campbell plays Tanner, with Robert Kurcz, Leigh Lombardi, Tom Case and Judy Levitt in supporting roles. The low ratings on IMDb, 4.8 from roughly 4,200 votes, and on TMDB, 4.8 from about 127 votes, indicate a modest reception for the film.
