Marshland

Set in 1980 in the marshlands of the Guadalquivir in southern Spain, the film follows two homicide detectives from Madrid who are sent to a small, remote town as punishment. Juan and Pedro hold opposing political views and differ in their methods, but they must work together when two teenage sisters disappear during the local festivities and are later found murdered. The investigation runs into a wall of silence in a community bound to its traditions, where the deaths appear to be the work of someone who has been killing young women in the area for years.

Alberto Rodríguez directed and co-wrote the film with Rafael Cobos. It came before his later features Prison 77 and The Tigers. Javier Gutiérrez and Raúl Arévalo play Juan and Pedro, with María Varod, Perico Cervantes, Jesús Ortiz and Jesús Carroza among the supporting cast. The production involved 42 credited cast members and 78 crew members, and was made for about 4 million dollars.

Released in September 2014, Marshland is a crime mystery thriller running 104 minutes. It earned roughly 5 million dollars worldwide against its budget. Audiences rate it 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb from about 39,000 votes and 7 out of 10 on TMDB from just over a thousand votes. A film critics' rating of 7.8 out of 10 from 34 reviews places it above both audience scores.
