Attack on Titan is a Japanese action fantasy film set in a world where giant humanoid creatures have driven humanity behind enormous walls. The story follows Eren, a young man living in relative peace within that protection, alongside his friends Mikasa and Armin. When a Titan of unprecedented size breaches the wall, their home is overrun and the survivors are forced into a desperate struggle against the creatures outside.
The film is directed by Shinji Higuchi and written by Yusuke Watanabe and Tomohiro Machiyama, based on the manga by Hajime Isayama. It is the third feature Higuchi directed, following Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo and The Floating Castle, both from 2012, and it arrived in 2015 alongside a direct sequel, Attack on Titan II: End of the World, released the same year. Haruma Miura leads the cast as Eren, with Kiko Mizuhara as Mikasa, Kanata Hongo as Armin, Nanami Sakuraba as Sasha, Takahiro Miura as Jean and Satomi Ishihara as Hans.
Produced in Japan by TOHO, dentsu, Nikkatsu and Kodansha, the film earned about 31 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5 out of 10 from roughly 16,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 out of 10 from around 865 votes, a small fraction of the IMDb total. A critics' score of 6.3 out of 10 from 15 reviews places it slightly above the IMDb audience result but close to the TMDB figure.
