In 2031, a scientist working on what is meant to be a safe new weapon discovers that his project has caused dangerous disruptions in time. He is thrown back to Switzerland in 1817 along with his car, where he crosses paths with Victor Frankenstein, who has created a living creature of his own, and with the young Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, the future Mary Shelley. The film mixes horror and science fiction as the visitor from the future confronts figures who are, in his own timeline, the stuff of fiction.
Roger Corman directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with F. X. Feeney. The film came late in Corman's directing career, after a long gap following A Time for Killing in 1967; it is the nineteenth of the nineteen features he directed. John Hurt plays Dr. Joe Buchanan, with Raúl Juliá as Victor Frankenstein, Nick Brimble as the creature, Bridget Fonda as Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Jason Patric as Lord Byron and Michael Hutchence as Percy Bysshe Shelley. It was produced by Corman with Kobi Jaeger and Thom Mount for 20th Century Fox and The Mount Company, on a budget of about 12 million dollars, and runs 85 minutes.
Its reception has been modest. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from roughly 4,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9 from about 140 votes, suggesting a small but slightly more favourable audience on the latter.
