Detention

Detention is set at Grizzly Lake High School, where a masked killer known as Cinderhella is targeting students in the run-up to the prom. Riley Jones, a socially isolated teenager already struggling with school and an unrequited crush on classmate Clapton Davis, finds herself among the students stuck in detention while the murders continue. When she tries to warn people that the killer is after her, nobody takes her seriously, so she sets out to work out what is going on herself. What begins as a slasher scenario develops into something stranger, involving time travel, body swapping and other genre elements.

Joseph Kahn directed and co-wrote the film with Mark Palermo. It is his second feature, following Torque in 2004, and it sits between that film and Power/Rangers in his filmography. Shanley Caswell plays Riley, with Josh Hutcherson as Clapton, Spencer Locke as Ione Foster, Dane Cook as Principal Karl Verge, A.D. Johnson as Sander Sanderson and Walter Perez as Elliot Fink. The production had a budget of about 10 million dollars.

Detention is a low-budget genre hybrid mixing comedy, horror and science fiction rather than a straightforward slasher. It opened in April 2012 and runs 93 minutes. On IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from around 17,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.6 out of 10, from 423 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 45 reviews is close to those audience figures, indicating a mixed reception across both groups.
