The Great Magician

Set in the chaotic aftermath of the Revolution in China, the story takes place in a land divided among warring generals. One such warlord holds a young woman captive, hoping she will become his seventh wife, though he refuses to force her into the marriage. As local revolutionaries plot to kill the general and restore the republic, a mysterious man returns from abroad. Using his mastery of magic, he seeks to rescue the woman he loves, leading to a complex game of deception between the various factions.

The film was directed by Derek Yee Tung-Sing, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Tin-Nam Chun and Lau Ho-leung. This production follows his previous works Protégé, Shinjuku Incident, and Triple Tap, and precedes Sword Master. The ensemble cast features Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Lau Ching-wan, Zhou Xun, Yan Ni, Wu Gang, and Daniel Wu.

Produced by Bona Film Group and Emperor Motion Pictures, the movie had a budget of 15 million USD but earned 2 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audiences provided mixed to moderate ratings, with a score of 5.9/10 on IMDb from 2,100 votes and 6/10 on TMDB from 72 votes.
