Monster Hunt

Monster Hunt is set in an old China where the realms of humans and monsters were once kept apart, and where fear and greed have driven the monsters to the edge of extinction. A monster queen, hunted and pregnant, flees into the human world and uses a desperate trick to pass her unborn heir to a human for safekeeping. The child ends up with Song Tianyin, a good-natured but unheroic young man, and the monster hunter Huo Xiaolan. Together the unlikely pair must protect the infant, Wuba, from monsters, monster hunters and a powerful official who wants the future king for himself.

The film was directed by Raman Hui, following his earlier animated work on Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five, Scared Shrekless and Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos; it was his first live-action feature and later led to a sequel. Alan Yuen wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Bill Kong Chi-Keung and Kenneth Yee. The cast includes Bai Baihe, Jing Boran, Jiang Wu, Elaine Jin, Wallace Chung Hon-Leung and Eric Tsang, among 25 credited performers and a crew of 40. Released in July 2015, the Hong Kong-Chinese production ran 118 minutes and became a major commercial success, with worldwide box office of about 387 million dollars. Ratings are moderate: 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 6,100 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 381 votes, against a critics' score of 5.9 from 28 reviews.
