Short description

Set in northern France during the 1980s, Beating Hearts follows the turbulent relationship between Clotaire, a rebellious youth from a modest background, and Jackie, a student from a wealthier family. Despite their social differences, the teenagers fall deeply in love, but their connection is strained by gang violence and crime. After Clotaire is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, the two are separated for many years. When they eventually reunite, they must navigate the consequences of their past and the complexities of their adult lives.

The film was directed by Gilles Lellouche, marking his third feature following The Players and Sink or Swim. The screenplay was co-written by Lellouche, Audrey Diwan, and Ahmed Hamidi. The cast features Adèle Exarchopoulos and François Civil in the lead roles, with younger versions of the characters played by Mallory Wanecque and Malik Frikah. Other cast members include Alain Chabat and Benoît Poelvoorde.

Produced by StudioCanal, France 2 Cinéma, Trésor Films, and Chi-Fou-Mi Productions, the movie had a budget of 37 million USD and earned 36 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception was generally positive, with a 7/10 rating on IMDb from 8,300 votes and a 7.2/10 rating on TMDB from 1,061 votes. In contrast, film critics gave the movie a lower rating of 5.5/10 based on 25 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film version shown in May 2024 at the Cannes Film Festival was 166 minutes long. The version released in cinemas in October of the same year ran for 161 minutes. Director and screenwriter Gilles Lelouch later revealed that he was still editing the film just a couple of days before its release, and that he had completely cut three scenes – a dance at the end of the film and scenes in which Clotier breaks down and trashes Jackie’s house, while simultaneously begging her to talk to him.
  • At the same time that French media reported that a total of one million tickets had been sold for the film, film fans posted pictures of almost empty cinema halls on social media across France (almost 1,000 cinemas across the country and the first four weeks of the film's release). The film's director and lead actors even reposted some of these photos.
