Fright Night
Short description
Fright Night is a 2011 horror comedy about Charley Brewster, a high school student who has finally made it into the popular crowd and is dating Amy, the most sought-after girl in school. His new neighbour, Jerry, seems friendly enough at first, but Charley becomes convinced that something is wrong with him. As he watches Jerry's behaviour, he reaches the conclusion that the man is a vampire preying on the neighbourhood. No one believes him, not even his mother, Jane, and his former best friend Ed is no longer someone he takes seriously. Unable to persuade anyone, Charley turns to Peter Vincent, a Las Vegas stage magician who claims to be a vampire hunter, and takes matters into his own hands.
Craig Gillespie directed the film, which sits between Mr. Woodcock and Million Dollar Arm in his filmography, from a screenplay by Marti Noxon. Anton Yelchin plays Charley, with Colin Farrell as Jerry Dandrige, Toni Collette as Jane Brewster, David Tennant as Peter Vincent, Imogen Poots as Amy Petersen and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Ed Thompson. The production had a budget of 30 million USD and took in about 41 million USD worldwide.
Audience response was moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from 119,000 votes and on TMDB 6.3/10 from 2,184 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3/10 from 180 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Steven Spielberg's contribution to the film amounted to the following: footage of a crucifix falling into a pool directly in front of the camera was inserted (after Colin Farrell attacks Christopher Mintz-Plasse); when Colin Farrell's appearance proved not frightening enough, at Spielberg's suggestion, the filmmakers returned to the original concept of a jaw resembling a shark's jaw.
- Colin Farrell stated that he would deliver his monologue in Latin because it would sound “more menacing.” He even took Latin lessons with a teacher. The monologue did not make it into the film, however, the teacher was so impressed that she subsequently wrote a scientific paper about her time on set.
- During the filming of one scene, Colin Farrell went too far and bit stuntman Christopher Mintz-Plasse to the point of drawing blood with prop teeth.
- Chris Sarandon, who played Jerry Dandridge in the original 1985 film *Fright Night*, played the role of the highway driver in a cameo appearance.
- Colin Farrell's makeup had five stages, with the final stage (when Charlie fights in the basement) created using computer technology.
- The car chase scene was filmed in one long take. Footage of the location and motorcycle was added to the image later.
